Brown Algae

INCI: Alaria Esculenta Extract

Algae has gained a reputation as a miracle cosmetic ingredient as it is comparatively high of minerals, micornutrients and vitamins. Besides calcium, magnesium, iron and kalium, they contain micronutrients such as iodine, copper, zinc, selenium, manganese, strontium, molybdenum and germanium. Their broad spectrum of vitamins includes vitamin A, C, E, folic acid, niacin as well as a vitamin B12 complex that normally only occurrs in animals. These components are crucial for the skin and connective tissue. In addition to this, seaweed is rich in poly- unsaturated fatty acids what is also important for the membrane stability of the skin.

Its unique polysaccharides that mainly occur in red and brown algae are especially important for the cosmetics industry. Among these are alginic acids and its salts, alginates, carrageenans as well as fucoidans, glucans and further, partially unknown algae sugars.

This great variety of valuable ingredients makes algae true allrounders. They can have stimulating effects on the skin´s own collagen synthesis which can slow down aging. This way, skin thickness can be decreased and skin elasticity can be increased. Therefore, algae are also very helpful in anti-cellulite treatments. They can have a positive influence on skin tension as well as connective tissue and can also slow down aging processes. Proteins, minerals and micronutrients provide skin cells with energy and offer proctection against dehydration and pollutants. Algae extract in general acts as a free radical scavenger and provides natural UV protection.
